Filling your cup

Filling your cup

Filling your cup

I think most of us have heard the phrase “You can’t pour from an empty cup”.  Sounds simple, right? Is it really though? For so many of us filling our cups isn’t always a top priority. Instead, we try to do it all.

For so many women, me included, that means being caretakers, nurturers, remembering birthdays, packing lunches, checking on parents, running errands, planning the parties, and juggling everything life throws our way.  Meeting our own needs isn’t always on the radar.

Why is it so much harder for women?

Many of us associate our worth with how much we give, how selfless we can be, how accommodating, how good and how nice.

Here is a truth that bears repeating: You deserve to be full, not just functional, but full.

What Does “Filling your cup” Really Mean?

Your cup, metaphorically speaking, is your energy, your joy, your reserves. When you give and give without replenishing that cup empties, and fast.

Filling your cup means different things to each of us. It can mean reclaiming time for yourself, without guilt. It can mean setting some boundaries and saying “no”. It can mean asking for help, resting when you are tired and doing things that bring you joy.

What do You do to Fill your Cup?

Life is so busy. The importance of filling your cup, to me, also means prioritizing self-care and well-being. I need to fill my cup to contribute to the world and I try to do that by engaging in activities that bring me joy, reduce stress, and promote a sense of well-being.

I schedule a few minutes of intentional quiet into my day. Even five minutes can be restorative. I exercise. For me that means going on a daily walk.  It also means saying “no” more often and setting boundaries to protect my energy.

I am fortunate that art brings me so much joy. I find painting restorative. I paint to communicate, to express beauty, but also to regulate my emotions, to make sense of the world, to feel fulfilled.

Art brings me joy and fills my cup!

I would love to know your thoughts on this…

Final Thoughts

Take a break!

Take a breath!

Fill your cup until it overflows!
