Spring in the Ottawa region brings a burst of colour, and for floral artists like me, there’s nothing quite as joyful as painting poppies. Their delicate petals, vibrant colours, and natural sunlight-catching beauty make them perfect subjects for watercolour floral art.
In my latest series for the upcoming spring show at Melt Studio + Gallery in Picton, I’ve explored the theme of happiness through poppies, capturing moments from quiet buds to vibrant bouquets.
Fascinating Facts About Poppies
Poppies (Papaver species) are beloved worldwide for their beauty and symbolism:
Sun-lovers: Poppies thrive in full sun and well-drained soil, naturally turning toward the light, a perfect metaphor for joy.
Cultural symbolism: In ancient Greece and Rome, poppies represented sleep, dreams, and remembrance. During World War I, the red poppy became a symbol of remembrance, inspired by the poem In Flanders Fields.
Romantic allure: Poppies have long been linked to love, passion, and fleeting beauty, appearing in poetry, art, and gardens for centuries.
Poppies Throughout History and Romance
Poppies carry rich historical and romantic symbolism:
In literature, they symbolize sleep, peace, and dreams, inspiring both poets and lovers.
Their ephemeral bloom represents the fleeting nature of happiness, reminding us to cherish every small moment.
Across cultures, they have symbolized hope, remembrance, and passion, making them ideal subjects for art that celebrates life and joy.

The Happiness in Bloom Series
This spring collection includes six paintings, each exploring a different facet of joy found in poppies and in nature.
Sunlit Trio — Three white oriental poppies open toward the light, their petals glowing softly around deep purple centres. Together they suggest companionship, balance, and the simple happiness found in shared light. (37¾ × 27¼ in.)
Spring Secret — A single purple poppy bud holds the promise of bloom yet to come. Still closed, it embodies the anticipation and gentle optimism of early spring. (12 × 12 in.)
A Happy Bloom — A single purple poppy stands quietly closed, its petals gathered in a moment of peaceful potential, the quiet assurance that beauty is present even before it fully reveals itself. (12 × 12 in.)
Joyful Trio — Three purple poppies stand together in calm harmony, each bloom distinct yet connected. A celebration of the steady, quiet happiness of togetherness. (12 × 12 in.)
A Handful of Sunshine — Five small yellow poppies form a warm little bouquet, with one reddish-orange bloom adding a spark of contrast. Like sunlight gathered in a hand. (12 × 12 in.)
Whimsical Poppies — A vibrant, joyful field of yellow, pink, white, and orange poppies — carefree delight and playful energy in full colour. (20⅜ × 17⅛ in.)
All six originals will be on view at Melt Studio + Gallery in Picton from May 15 – June 7, 2026, with a vernissage on Saturday, May 16 from 1–4 pm. I'd love to see you there.
And a special note - "Sunlit Trio" will be gracing the cover of the *Picton Gazette Mother's Day issue, the weekend before the show opens.
A Poetic Companion : Petals in the Sun
Golden, pink, white, and flame,
Little bursts that whisper my name.
Quiet buds, open blooms, and light,
Happiness captured in colour bright.
Together they stand, together they sway,
A fleeting moment of joy in May.
Happy Spring!
